Flow State

Jessica Andrade

The ‘flow state’ is a mental state in which a person is fully absorbed in the present moment and experiences a feeling of effortless concentration and enjoyment. It’s often described as a state of ‘flow’ because it feels like time is flowing smoothly and quickly.

To achieve the flow state, you need to have clear goals, a good balance of challenge and skill, and immediate feedback. Here are some steps you can follow to help you get into the flow state:

‘Removing anything that might pull your attention away from the task’.

Try to let go of any thoughts or worries that might be distracting you, and focus all your attention on the task at hand.

Jessica Andrade last fought Lauren Murphy at UFC 283. What we saw was flow state in action…

The flow state can also be achieved in martial arts. In fact, martial arts can be an excellent way to experience the flow state because they involve physical movement, clear goals, and immediate feedback. Here are some tips for achieving the flow state in martial arts:

Take deep breaths and try to control your breathing to help you stay calm and centered.

Before you start practicing, take a few minutes to visualize the movements you’ll be doing. This can help you get into the right mindset and prepare your body for the physical demands of the activity.

The more you practice, the better you’ll become at the techniques, and the easier it will be to enter the flow state.

Try to let go of any distractions and focus solely on your movements. Pay attention to your body and the sensations you’re feeling.

Instead of worrying about winning or losing, focus on the movements and techniques you’re using. This will help you stay in the moment and avoid getting too caught up in the outcome.

Flow state, reminds me of when sword practitioners speak of the sword and body becoming one, in perfect harmony and balance. The weapon becomes an extension of one’s body!

Remember, achieving the flow state can take time and practice. Most will never get it and never get there!
